LIFE ON AN ICEFLOE - IVAN PAPANIN - SOVIET SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION TO NORTH POLE LIFE ON AN ICEFLOE By Ivan Papanin Translated from the Russian by Fanny Smitham Published by Hutchinson & Co., LTD 240 Pages 21 Illustrations From dust jacket fly-leaf: 'On May 21st, 1937, four Soviet scientists were landed by aeroplane near the North Pole. The icefloe on which they found themselves was to be their home for nine months, until February 19th 1938, and during that period they travelled southwards, drifting a distance of 1,324 miles. This book tells the story. The leader of the expedition, Papanin, recorded daily in his diary the doings of himself and his three companions: Shirshov, the marine biologist; Fedorov, in charge of magnetic observations; and Krenkel, the radio operator. The dog of the expedition, "Vesioly" (Merry) must certainly not be omitted. Written in the simplest , most economical style of one who had frequently worked an 18-hour day before beginning his record, this diary gives a dramatic picture of life in the high latitudes, with its daily scientific observations and its unending struggle against the cold. The book is illustrated with a number of interesting photographs, taken on the drifting icefloe.' Unclipped dust jacket is complete but has a number of edge tears, creases and some surface rubbing.
