Little Langdale Tarn Cumbria Original Watercolour Painting By James Faed (1856-1920) A very fine watercolour painting on paper by Scottish Landscape artist James Faed. The painting is titled Little Langdale and depicts a very fine and detailed landscape of the area. This painting is a highly accomplished work and has all the elements of a great landscape, the trees in the foreground, the mountains in the distance and the clouded sky overhead. The painting is a rare scene by Faed, whose work which more commonly depicted Scottish landscapes. The painting remains in fine condition, but is slightly faded with foxing to the background all of which are due to age. The painting is mounted behind glass and is presented in a giltwood frame with minor imperfections. The painting is not signed but is inscribed verso in the artists hand detailing the title and artists name. A very fine painting that would grace any home. This painting is one of a pair by Faed, the other is also for sale on this site. James Faed Junior was a landscape painter, best known for his scenes of heather and moorland, many of which were painted in the Galloway heartland. He spent much of his early years in the 1880s and 1890s painting in Galloway. Some of his pictures were featured in books such as JM Sloan's Galloway (published by Adam & Charles Black, London 1908) and also Black's watercolour series of 1919. Many of the scenes are painted within half an hour of Gatehouse, the town associated with this family of artists, or from New Galloway where he spent much of his later life. One such scene is said to have inspired Sir Harry Lauder's song Keep Right on to the End of the Road which he wrote during the First World War after his own son was killed in action in France. James Faed Junior had spent much time in 1896 and in 1897 up in the north, where he had first hand experience of highland lochs and hillsides. His numerous sketches of this period capture the beauty and majesty of Scotland's rugged uplands. James Faed Junior was influenced by the tradition developed by Horatio McCulloch (1805-67), Alexander Fraser Junior (1828-99) and the Carlisle born Sam Bough (1822-1878). These artists painted in the Cadzow Forrest near Hamilton in Central Scotland. They painted nature and were inspired by the beauty of the Scottish hills, trees and mountains. James Faed Junior had no formal instruction, but was heavily influenced by his father, and by the work of John MacWhirter (1839-1911) and his Uncle Tom Faed's friend, Peter Graham (1836-1921). His father was friendly with Sam Bough and no doubt introduced the young James to him when undertaking an engraving of Bough in 1877. James Faed's own mountain landscapes and raging rivers showed some of the grandeur of McCulloch and MacWhirter, but his lowland watercolours bore the softness of Bough. Both James Faed Senior and his son exhibited pictures in the 1880s which resulted from time spent working in Cadzow Forest. James Junior won a Diploma of Merit Bronze Medal at the International Exhibition of Industry, Science & Art in Edinburgh in 1886 for this springtime in Cadzow Forrest. James Faed Junior first exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1876. Over the next 30 years, 50 pictures featured in exhibitions that also showed the work of his father, his uncles John and Thomas and also his brother William Cotton Faed.
