DESCRIPTION: We believe this to be either a 1956 or 1957 model year, but you can be the judge. If you have any info, feel free to email us, we would appreciate it! New and never run. Paint and lettering shows excellent and crisp. Inside of wheel, near axle, on of a few of the wheels show some very light pitting. Otherwise wheels look new and un-run. Bottom chassis of caboose is clean as a whistle- NICE. Sorry we no longer have the original box. Will pack carefully for shipping. Some History of the 6017: History The 6017 has the distinction of having the second longest production period of any Lionel caboose in the postwar era. The only caboose to outlive the 12-year life of the 6017 is the 6357 caboose. The 6017 underwent almost every Lionel production change -- for an SP caboose -- during the twelve years. For simplicity reasons this page will discuss the common variations along with a few rare ones mentioned for reference purposes. The 6017 is one of the most common Lionel items. It was included in numerous catalogued and uncatalogued sets as well as being available for separate sale. Locating a 6017 caboose is an easy task. Trying to acquire every variation will take months, if not years or searching. Two well known caboose collectors have been collecting variations to the 6017 for years. Each have accumulated over 50 variations of it, and the end is still not in sight! Almost all variations focus on the color of the mold or color of the painted shell. Features The 6017 was introduced in 1951 as the entry level caboose. Detail was sparce and the 6017 only included the basics. Standard features were: painted or unpainted bodies, white lettering and a single operating coupler. Early 1950 versions included bar-end trucks. Beginning in 1957, AAR trucks became the standard. Additionally, all 6017s manufactured up to and including 1956 were attached to the frame with a screw at each end of the shell. Beginning in 1957, a metal tab which was bent over replaced the screws at each end. Additional Detail, Photos & Box Information The only unusual 6017 caboose is a one year only item from 1956. This variation deals with the lettering on the side of the caboose. It only contains the word 'Lionel' and does not include the word 'Lines'. Collectors do actively seek this cabose and it will command a slight premium in today's marketplace. The length of this caboose is approximately 7" long (coupler to end). None of the versions listed below can be considered hard to fine. However, as stated above, there are numerous variations involving the mold color and paint color. Lionel Lines, Bar-end Trucks - The main entry level caboose used by Lionel from 1951 to 1957. Lionel, Bar-end Trucks - A one year only variation from 1956. Collector do actively seek this variation and is not easy to locate. 6017 - Lionel Lines, AAR Trucks - - The main beginner caboose used by Lionel from 1958 to 1962. About me: Hello, my name is Joe.
