Lionel Electronic Labs CDV-700 This is a fully functional low range (millirem per hour) gieger muller (GM) radiation survey instrument. As you can see from the picture it comes with a sidewall GM. The side wall GM has a sliding shield that twists to open and to close a 'window' that reveals the detector (a brass colored cylinder). As you can see from the picture, with the window 'open' the meter has a reading of approximately 1mR/hr on contact with the check source on the side of the scaler bottom. This operability reading was taken with the open window of the GM probe centered over the check source and in contact with the meter bottom. This survey meter requires two (2) D-cell batteries. The advantage of having a sidewall GM with a sliding shield is that you can determine whether or not you are in a plume (radioactive cloud) if there is a release of radioactive gasses: if the closed window reading and the open window reading is the same then you are not immersed in the plume. If the open window reading is higher than the closed window reading then you are in the plume. The increased reading is because beta radiation emitted by some of the radionuclides in the plume only travel a few feet and are attenuated by the probes sliding shield. Gamma radiation travels much further than beta radiation and is less attenuated by the probes read more
