Charles William Duvall (1864 – 1966) Lived to be 101.... Lovely Spring Landscape for sale. Ready to hang. Sized and dated 44 in the lower right corner. This painting is 8" x 10" and in the frame is 15" x 17". The frame is newer and is a composition frame with gold finish. Considered by many, at the time of his death, to be the dean of Columbus, Ohio artists, Charles William Duvall was involved in painting for more than 65 years.According to an article written at the time of the artist’s celebration of his 100th birthday, Duvall was born November 1, 1864 on a farm near Galipolis, Ohio. By 1889 the family had moved to Columbus, Ohio. Artistically, he studied for ten years under Edward Parker Hayden before touring the art centers of Europe and returning to settle in Columbus. There he spent the remainder of his life teaching and painting. Exhibitions of his work were primarily local while inspiration for his popular landscapes included the rolling hills of Ohio and West Virginia.In 1949 he was forced to give up painting because of failing eyesight, but two years later he was back in the studio after a successful eye operation.Of his profession Duvall stated: “Art is an expression of life.” On teaching he commented: “Teaching makes a student out of the teacher.
