This is an interesting watercolor & gouche by well listed New York artist Stuyvesant Van Veen,1910-1987. Van Veen was know for his modern architecture, rual and city genre paintings andmurals. This my have been a study for a mural project, it’s 19”x 8” in a 26”x 16” frame. It showsJohn Brown who was an American abolitionist, who believed and advocated armed insurrectionas the only way to overthrow the institution of slavery in the U.S. This looks to be Brown’s trialafter his failed attempt to raid an armory at Gail’s Ferry. Both frame and watercolor are in goodcondition.
