As well as covering locomotive development between 1911 and 1947, the book gives a brief history of development from 1850 to 1911. It sets out to record the history of the steam locomotive on the East Coast Route, after a brief survey of the Great Northern Railway, it details the growth of the big engine policy by Sir Nigel Gresley and its subsequent handling by Thompson and Peppercorn. The classes are fully illustrated with photographs and line drawings, while several fascinating might-have-beens are shown in elevation. Considerable attention is given to the less glamorous classes, the ubiquitous freight and mixed traffic machines are not neglected in favour of the dashing Pacifics. This is a balanced account of the development of steam on the LNER.Hardback with dustjacket, published in 1974 by Peco. 93 pages thick.Described as in good condition for year. Dustjacket has some light/moderate shelfwear, plus a small tear (about half-inch) to bottom on spine. I will be placing the dustjacket in a clear protective sleeve prior to posting.
