THE LONDON MORNING PENNY POST Wednesday December 26 to Friday December 28 1744 .Number 261 London, Printed for J.Nicholson near Sessions-House Pp 2,approx 41cm x 28cm. A broadsheet newspaper printed in three columns on both sides. The front page has an account of THE WAGER store ship- a series of articles to be continued. The other side has a good piece (perhaps 15 column cm) on an execution near TRING at GUBBLECUT CROSS. The murderer COLLEY who has apparently murdered a woman whom he thought was a WITCH is brought to the gibbet under the guard of 108 troops. The local population are apparently afraid to approach because of the soldiers but more than 100 observe from a distance and thousands more have lined the route to the place of execution. He hands a paper to the Sherrif which bears his Declaration ,which is fully reproduced here. He declares that he does not believe that there are such beings as witches and prays to God that others do not follow his example and persecute or endager the life of their fellow creatures. This is a very pleasing, although quite fragile paper- lots of small stories no doubt discussed at length in the coffee Houses of London.A good evocation of the mid eighteenth century. Our picture only shows the top half or so of the paper. It is complete .This is the only issue of this paper that we have in stock
