In this auction we are selling a set of 4 HAKATA URASAKI Statue/Figurines. This are the original deal with original stickers and signatures of the artist. ALL FOUR PICTURED FOR ONE PRICE!!! The history of these are as follows> Historical background of so-called Hakata Urasaki doll During the Korean War, June 1950 - July 1953, many U.S. military personnel came to Japan, including soldiers. (During those days, Japanese government had been controlled by U.S. forces as the results of Second World War.) Since Fukuoka is very near Korea, Fukuoka became a major military logistic base for U.S. forces. Hakata is the name of a town in Fukuoka prefecture. The so-called Hakata Urasaki dolls were made as souvenirs products, from Japan, for U.S. military personnel. Therefore, many, if not all the "Hakata Urasaki" dolls would be found in the U.S.A. Why they are called Hakata Urasaki dolls ? Two wholesalers of Hakata dolls had produced Hakata dolls because U.S. military headquarters in Japan placed a large order for them. Urasaki is the name of one of two wholesalers. The "Hakata Urasaki" doll was sold at shops at military bases of U.S. Forces in Fukuoka. In other words, Hakata Urasaki dolls were souvenirs from Japan made exclusive for U.S. military personnel. Why did "Hakata Urasaki" dolls disappeared ? The"Hakata" dolls featured vivid body's color and face expression as if living. The "Hakata Urasaki" dolls are finished by using a surface-coating, which is a kind of waterproofing paints and because of that, "Hakata Urasaki" dolls had no advantage over the standard "Hakata" dolls and did not have as vivid body colors. After the end of Korean War, most of U.S. military personnel left Fukuoka, and so the "Urasaki" doll store had ceased to make any more of the so-called "Hakata Urasaki" dolls, because most of The Japanese prefered the vivid colors of the "Hakata" Dolls over the more "washable" colors of the "Hakata Urasaki" Dolls. Why was the "Hakata Urasaki" Dolls washable ? Supposing that you handle the "Hakata" doll with your bare hands, Hakata dolls will be easily soiled with finger marks, in the event that you clean "Hakata" dolls with a wet towel, clothes painted on the surface will be damaged. The Japan wholesalers who made the dolls were afraid that U.S. military personnel would try cleaning the dolls , in other words, they feared having claims from U.S. military headquarters, who were their clients. Because of that, they finished the "Hakata Urasaki" dolls by coating the surface with a kind of "waterproofing paint", so note that Hakata dolls are not "washable" but the Hakata Uraski were suppose to be. However, you need to consider how much time has passed since the "Hakata Urasaki" Dolls were made. It would be better that you don't clean "Hakata Urasaki" dolls now because, in short, there is a problem with the durability of the waterproofing paints used and damge may occur. Conclusion : The so-called "Hakata Urasaki" dolls were produced as souvenirs from Japan for U.S. military personnel as previously mentioned. The Japanese people never really purchased the "Hakata Urasaki" dolls and never recognize them as that valuable at the time because they lack the rich vivid colors of the other dolls.
