It uses an advanced Japanese design, which draws the smoke through two replaceable carbon filters located inside and under the ashtray. It's super quiet, and eliminates the smoke, smell, and ash dust. If you smoke, live with someone who smokes, or smoke and live with someone who dosen't smoke, this is a must have. Tips for use: After extended use, you may put a drop of oil into the fan motor to keep it super quiet and smooth. Tips for cleaning: The tray lifts right off and the white dome also comes off (has a snug fit) for easy complete washing. The base can be wiped out...however, we recently did a test on one, washing the entire base (with batteries and filters removed) under lots of hot running water and dishsoap.
