Welcome to 21thegreatone's Auctions... ** *ATTN : RARE WORLD WAR II COLLECTORS...THIS IS ONE FOR YOU!!!* ** ***NOTE" For those of you who are following my auctions on these letters and V-Mails...this lot is a MUST HAVE!! The November 25th , 1943 V-Mail was written on THANKSGIVING DAY!!*** ******YOU ARE BIDDING ON THE FOLLOWING:****** An AMAZING and touching lot of SIX "V-Mails Home" from a Soldier stationed in ITALY to his Wife at home in WASHINGTON, PA. As RARE as you can get...these are genuine ONE OF A KIND FINDS for the Vintage Militaria Collector, or Ephemera Collector! Six (6) V-Mails all dated between November 21--December 1, 1943 NOTE : The action in Italy (by this time) was getting pretty intense, and Censorship of the Military Mail was at a peak. Thus, Mail service to the States was VERY SLOW, as you will see that the Postmarks on the envelopes are almost 2 weeks AFTER the dates on the actual letters (with all of them not reaching the states until Early December!) FROM "PVT WADE L. McDOWELL (#33286407) of the "HQ BTRY 2nd BN 77 F.A.", stationed in ITALY (SICILY)during World War II in 1943. (Often called "Squeak"--his nickname, or "Daddie" by his wife) His wife is a MRS. WADE L. McDOWELL ("Dorothy" or "Dot") of WASHINGTON, PA (Often referred to in the letters as "Honey" or "Dearest Honey" "Mommie" or in his letters to her. (Washington, PA is a town just outside of Pittsburgh) Handritten by Pvt. McDowell, his Batallion stationed in ITALY during Nov. 1943, to his wife (missing him VERY MUCH back home in PA.)...these absolutely powerful, poignant and heartfelt V-Mails are a fascinating piece of history! Content of the letters range widely and include: "How he is feeling on a daily basis"..."Not being able to write because he has been so busy"..."Receiving a Christmas box her mother sent to him"..."That Pete Snee (owner of the dairy w she is working) bought another dairy"..."Receiving a package of stationery from Dad"..."That he understands why she is mad at her boss for not paying her more"..."Merry Christmas & Happy New Years wishes to her"..."Today is Thanksgiving Day, and a day I don't think I will ever forget"..." Mentions that he guesses his brother PAUL is now in the Army by the way he writes (NOTE: Paul WAS in the Army at this time and stationed in the PACIFIC, as you will see from the sets of HIS letters I am listing) ..."Mentions that in one of her letters she is quitting that bad habit (drinking and lushing it up with other guys while he is away--see my other listings for THOSE details!), and that it makes him happy to hear it"..." Receiving a few letters from friends in the Army including ED WOJTYNA who is in IRELAND (NOTE: Wojytna was a close frined of his when both were at FORT BRAGG, and Wojytna was deployed to Ireland--Wojytna later saw action in the BATYLE OF BRITAIN!) ..."That in one of her letters she was telling him what was going on with the War, and that the letter Wojtyna received was sent to him when he had just arrived in AFRICA"..."Receiving a Christmas package from her, and that he likes the sweater she sent"..." Another mention of Wojtyna that tells her is batallion is "HQ. CO 2 BN--29th INFANTRY" ..."On the Dec. 1st V-Mail he states that "Today starts another month, and that November seemed to go fast...and that he hopes the time keeps going fast so that we could get all this over with over !"..."Tells her she should put up a Christmas Tree this year,and that last year they didn't because he didn't get his furlough at Christmas"...Hoping that maybe he will be home for NEXT Christmas (NOTE: He wasn't--he actually was in Italy and on the move towards GERMANY in Dec. 1944)...and much more! All V-Mails PERFECTLY LEGIBLE...with ENVELOPES INTACT and in Very Good Shape! Each Envelope has a postmark about 10-16 days AFTER after the date on the actual letter (an indication as to how slow the mail was running during the height of the War, and the strict Censorship on the corres... read more
