Vanderbilt completed construction of the largest private residence in America, the 250-room Biltmore House in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina. Biltmore House was, and still is, a grand European chateau filled with original works of art, rare tapestries, bronzes, carpets, lamps, accessories, and antique furniture. Biltmore Estate licenses only the finest manufacturers to reproduce, adapt, and interpret items from George Vanderbilt’s private collection. Every time I see one, I picture a mermaid leaning over a tranquil pond, her long hair flowing into the water. Enjoy my tranquil pond. Amish Buggy 4 1/4” x 2” – Dated 1993 Text on Back – The Amish have their own carriage maker. All buggies must be equipped with battery operated lights, turn signal, and some even have windshield wipers. 2 – Picket Fence accessory pieces - 7” x 1” – Dated 1992 Bluebonnet walkway– Texas State Flower – 4” x 1 ½” – Dated 1998 Hyacinth archway and picket fence – 7” x 2 ½” Merry Sherwood – Berlin, MD – 7” x 5” – Dated 1995 Text on Back – This pre-Civil War structure was built and designed for lavish parties and for accommodating guests of long duration. In the 1850’s, Henry B. Johnson, a wealthy Philadelphian, met and married a local Berlin girl, Elizabeth Henry. He built her this grand home on a piece of property that was part of her dowry. Originally known as “Sherwood” this 27-room home has 8,500 sq. ft. and rises over 50 ft. This plantation has been named and renamed by its many owners. Among the names are “The Stokes Place” and “Dunwandrin” by a retired Army doctor. Its 1956 owners, the Drydens renamed the plantation “Merry Sherwood”. After passing through a couple of more owners it was purchased by Kirk Burbage, a Berlin native, in 1991. Restoring its interior as well as its exterior with exacting standards, Burbage hopes to preserve a piece of American heritage for the education and pleasure of future generations. It now serves as a Bed and Breakfast. Butterfly Cottage – Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts – 4” x 6” – Dated 1997 Back has a map of Martha’s Vineyard Island 30 South Battery, Charleston, SC - Miniature version, 3 ½” x 4 ¾” – Dated 1997 – Numbered piece 43/275 Text on back – James E Spear built this three story Italiante house c.1860 as his residence. Ocean Pathway Princess, Ocean Grove, NJ – 5” x 6” – Dated 1998 Text on Back – Founded in 1869 by 13 ministers and 13 laymen as a permanent Camp Meeting ground and Christian seaside resort, Ocean Grove is one of the few Camp Meeting sites that still remains true to its original purpose. A Camp Meeting is still held here every summer. Tents were the primary form of shelter for early visitors to Ocean Grove and 114 tent structures still stand. In addition, Ocean Grove is the largest assemblage of Victorian Architecture in the nation and is entered in the National Register of Historic Places.
