Lot of three small pottery vessels from Aibom Village, on Chambri Lake, PNG..The iconography of the very famous figural pottery originating from Aibom Village is the subject of a study by the German anthropogist Meinhard Schuster (Die Toepfergottheit von Aibom. Paideuma, Bd. XV, 1969). The figural earthenware pots are all variations of three characters: the pig face, the bird face, and the spirit face (human-ancestor). These characters are related to the myth of the great female culture heroine who originally brought pottery to Aibom, which she called her children. According to the myth she rejected a man but was overcome, so that as a result she lost her magic. To this day women must toil to dig the earth, work the clay by hand, build the clay vessels, dry them under the house, then fire them in an open fire, finally to transport the wares to market, for trade in sago, the staple of the Sepik diet.These pottery vessels were made in all sizes from the very large to the small. The ones offered here were made in the seventies for sale to tourists, when vacation cruises were bringing travelers up the Sepik River on the so-called Cannibal Tours.
