Up for auction is this beautiful lot of 7 Victorian tintype portraits, all in wonderful antique condition with their glass intact and images vividly arresting. Each tintype in its frame measures just over 2" wide & 2.75"tall. Each photograph is protected by a sheet of glass on which is layered a copper embossed or etched matte frame; a thin foil-like intricately decorated copper frame is wrapped perfectly around the tintype's edges over the matte & glass creating a beautiful little framed piece of antique art. I don't know a ton about the history of photography or tintypes in general so please excuse my lack of expertise- from what I gather a tintype is not made of tin at all but a sheet of iron coated in a dark lacquer & used as the support for the emulsion creating a direct positive image. These photos I believe are fairly classic pieces- the one horizontal tintype included in the lot I believe to be the most unusual (I'm only guessing) as it's a portrait of two people, sisters I'm guessing. The tintype of the young girl that is matted in white and gold has a unique design to it due to the matte, also the extra dark shot of the woman in black has an unusual matte which is decorated with tons of teeny tiny stars instead of the usual decorative swirls etc… Each piece has its own one-of-a-kind charm.There is some dark splotching on read more
