This is a lot of funny picture books for ages 3-8 by Tomie dePaola, titles and additional information below. The last one book is an illustrated early chapter book for ages 7-10 or to read aloud to younger children, which won the Newbery award for outstanding children's literature. One hardcover is noted below, the rest are softcovers, one Scholastic edition and the rest published by Puffin/Penguin. Books are not previously owned, pages perfect, but half have light cover or corner wear from handling (the other half new or like new), four with a small publisher's remainder mark on the top or bottom edge of the book near the spine, not visible on the opened pages or covers. Strega Nona Meets Her Match When Strega Amelia comes to Strega Nona's village and sets up her own rival business in lotions, potions, and matchmaking, she uses free sweets and cappuccino to draw customers away from her old friend. Strega Nona's customers desert her, and soon she can no longer afford to pay her helpers. The hapless Big Anthony goes to work for Strega Amelia, who leaves him in charge one day, with results that Strega Nona fans will find deliciously predictable. De Paola's watercolor illustrations seem bolder, brighter, and more comical than in the original story. While children who know the earlier books will be one step ahead, this engaging picture book will please those new to the series as well. A pleasure to read aloud, this features the broad humor that young children relish - Booklist Strega Nona Takes a Vacation After two very convincing dreams marked by advice from her deceased grandmother, Strega Nona decides she needs a vacation. She carefully instructs Bambolona and Big Anthony regarding everything they should (and should not ) do and then sets off for some much-needed R and R at the seashore. Later, Bambolona intercepts a package from her employer and, deciding that she prefers candy to bubble bath, switches the gift tags. Big Anthony uses too many of his new bath crystals and creates an avalanche of soapsuds flowing through the town. DePaola's ever-popular characters remain true to form in this latest offering, and series fans will enjoy the references to previous stories. The dream memories, involving a young Nonalina and her attentive grandmother, will also please young listeners. As always, dePaola's rich acrylic illustrations carry the story--sometimes even without the aid of text--making this a fine choice for both story hours and lap sharing. - Booklist Strega Nona, Her Story DePaola executes a clever concept with his trademark charm and humor, offering a prequel to the series that began in 1976 with the Caldecott Honor book Strega Nona. Here the author/artist tells how his charismatic character came to become a strega (witch) with a "magic touch." The "biography" begins on a dark and stormy night in the hills of Calabria, where Grandma Concetta authoritatively oversees Nona's birth. Convinced that Nona will be a strega like her, the big-hearted woman teaches her granddaughter how to use herbs and spells to remedy villagers' aches and troubles. Nona, along with her overconfident friend Amelia (who sets herself up as Nona's rival in some of the other books), attends the Academy for Stregas, but soon concludes that its newfangled approach to magic is not for her, and returns home to practice her craft the old-fashioned way. Eventually she discovers Grandma Concetta's all-important secret ingredient: love. With their expressive faces and pertly exaggerated profiles (Strega Nona's signature hooked nose punctuates her face even as a newborn), the classic characters happily cavort in sunnily colored, droll illustrations.
