Up for auction today is a pitcher and jam pot made by Bursley Ware of England. They are shown in a design by English potterer Frederick Rhead called "Floretta". The bottoms of both pieces have the brown Bursley Ware stamp in the shape of a shield , which includes pattern number of 1542 on the top and the registration number of 751076 on bottom. My reference books shows this as pattern number 2542, but these pieces are clearly marked 1542. The reference book also describes this pattern as "Naturalistic sprays of apple blossom painted on-glaze. The backstamp on these pieces is backstamp #7 which dates them to around 1929 or so. This pattern can be found in the collector's book Collecting Rhead Pottery , by Bernard Bumpus, on page 43, plate 29. These two pieces are in beautiful condition having no chips, cracks or repairs. The large milk/water pitcher measures an impressive 4 5/8" to the tallest part of the jug and measures 7 3/4" from end of handle to tip end of spout. I hope the pictures are not deceiving of this pitcher, as it is quite substantial in size and will hold a full 3 cups of liquid. The jam pot measures 3 1/2" with an opening diameter of 2 1/2". It has even crazing throughout but no dark staining. The lid of this set is silver plated and is marked EPNS. It is in good condition and only needs a good polishing. The jam read more
