This quilt is a great candidate for draping over a high stair railing; from any distance it presents like its only condition issue is a shot binding. And the masterful, elaborate hand-quilting wows you from any distance. This sweet nineteenth century Oak Reel has weakening and tendering to its overdyed green fabrics, a few minor wear holes and weakening visible on high spots in the Turkey Red fabric and an applied binding that's completely shot. But the charming design, generous borders bracketed by two-toned sawtooth strips and lush and expert hand-quilting are enough to make its flaws an afterthought. Size The quilt measures 75" x 90". Quilting The quilting is the finest feature of this quilt, with especially lush, large motifs and very fine stitching measuring 7-10 stitches to the inch, counting one side only. In the big appliqué blocks, the quilting is in allover straight lines spaced about 1 inch apart. Through the wide white borders, an especially lavish and curvy featd vine winds and sways dramatically. Filling in the space behind it are diagonal lines, spaced only about an inch apart. The open blocks are quilted just as curvily and elaborately as the wide borders. Double-line veins anchor a huge, showy featd wreath with lobes arcing towards both the inside and the outside. In the wreath's center swirls a similarly curvy-petalled rosette, itself spinning around a double-line ring center. In each of the corners of these blocks is a two-lobed figure that resembles a hoof print. Infill quilting in the little space that remains is in diagonal lines. The three corner blocks that are white are quilted in the same little rosette featured in the center of the larger wreaths. Piecing and Appliqué The piecing and appliqué is all by hand and very finely done. The big blocks are about 16 inches square. Batting, Binding & Backing The very even batting is thin to medium with just enough loft to accentuate the quilting dramatically. The backing is in a slightly looser weave of nice white fabric than the front. The very nice thin binding was hand applied and is entirely shot. Condition The condition of the quilt leaves the door open for you to approach it in a couple of different ways. It's sturdy enough to use and enjoy. The fine quilting on the supple, strong white cottons make it very appealing to grab and touch. The binding is blown and would be nice to see carefully replaced, but really none of the other flaws is severe enough to keep the quilt from displaying beautifully. The other option would be to treat it as an awfully nice cutter. For me it's not a cutter, but I can see how with the following damage, someone else might be comfortable cutting it: Two of the half-blocks of appliqué have small wear holes in the red fabric.
