M1904-06 Experimental Cavalry Saber made at the Springfield Armory. This is one of the rarest and hardest to find US swords. According to the book "American Swords & Makers' Marks," "The experimental sword is seldom encountered and only 1,039 were produced by Ames and the Springfield Armory produced 157 which were sequentially serial numbered." Thus, this sword is Serial # 8 of 157 produced at the Springfield Armory. The blade is marked "8" on one side, which is the Serial # 8. The other side of the blade is marked "S A (flaming bomb) 1906", which stands for Springfield Armory. The leather scabbard is marked at the top "5 B 56", which stands for the 5th Cavalry, Company B, No. 56.Overall condition is used and worn, but solid and very good overall. Blade is good to very good condition. The blade has an overall dull grey appearance, with no major pitting; there is about 6" of light rust along the edge near the center, a half-dozen minor nicks that don't show in the photos, and about 1/8 inch of the blade tip is missing (see photos). The leather scabbard is complete, never been cleaned or re-dyed, and is in good to very good condition. The leather is firm and stitching complete except for the bottom two inches of the tip (see photos). The bottom of the scabbard has been flattened or shrunk a bit so that the tip of the blade sticks out read more
