Original US M1909 Skeleton-RiggedQuartermaster's Saddle in relic condition, but with excellent tree, suitable for re-use.The QM saddle, often called a “Packer's Saddle,” was also used by Indian Scouts, Ft. Riley horse-breakers, Commissary Corps live-beef inspection officers (you can't make up this stuff), USGS and USFS personnel, and anybody else in government service who could requisition an extremely robust and very comfortable Western stock saddle. Ever-conservative, almost a decade after the turn-of-the-century, the government adopted a proven saddletree which was popular in the 1890s. The M1909 came in both fully-rigged and skeleton-rigged versions, and this example is one of the latter. It long ago lost its girth straps, stirrups, and stirrup straps, and its original leather covering is dry, with some blown seams. If this 1909 tree is like several others I've stripped and rebuilt, it was made by the JM Hays Wood Products Company of Kansas City in 1917-18, and will bear a manufacturer's label on its cantle. Fork will carry another label, proclaiming use of the “Sampson Steel Fork.” Tree is 17” in cowboy measure, 12” in military mode. Rawhide appears undamaged and wood is rock-solid, so with a quick clean-up, this tree is likely ready for recovering and new life—perhaps as the ultimate Wild Bunch saddle.PLEASE WAIT FOR INVOICE read more
