This antique violin is unlabelled but I'm fairly sure it would have been made in the period 1830 to 1870, probably in Saxony, which was later to become part of Germany. It has quite a small scroll and pegbox. The pegs are a good ebony set; not the originals but still perfectly okay. They adjust well. The fingerboard is somewhat wedge-shaped. Not grooved or marked. I have fitted a new set of medium-quality strings and a new bridge. The tailpiece has a fine tuner for each string. The shape of the violin is quite narrow, particularly the lower bout which has a width of 19.3 cm. (Upper bout 16 cm, middle bout 11.2 cm, length of back 35.5 cm.) The condition of the violin is extremely good for its age. No cracks of any sort and no other damage. The back is made from flamed maple. Subtle but attractive. I have played the violin to check it - it plays well. The sound is not loud but the violin is responsive and quite mellow. The new owner may wish read more
