Its hard to believe this piece is at least 220 years old! This is an exquisitely molded and hand painted porcelain gentleman holding a basket. I believe it is a sweetmeat dish. This high quality figural is so beautiful, its a shame it has suffered damage. It could be restored or just fill the basket with jelly beans or flowers or something and it would still display very well. According to my book, the mark on the bottom, which looks like blue crossed swords, was one of the variations of a mark used by Johann Wolfgang Hammann, Wallendorf, Thuringia, Germany. He founded a manufactory in 1763 which started porcelain making in 1764 after Hammann had received a privilege for porcelain production from the reigning duke. This mark was used from 1764 to 1787. The base has been broken with one foot attached to one piece resulting in a crack thru the rear ankle, the basket was broken in many places, and both handles are missing. Ironically, all fingers are intact. The reticulated basket has applied porcelain flowers along the outside and a floral design on the inside. This is a heavy piece measuring approximately 8" high, 10" wide and 7" deep. I hope someone out t can rescue this gorgeous piece! Please see my other beautiful antique figurines.
