Magnificent Han Dynasty Horse & Rider Allen's Antiques Ltd 10 DAY AUCTION We Do Not Accept Paypal. DESCRIPTION: A rare opportunity to acquire an ancient Chinese painted pottery horse & rider of museum quality, dating to China's Han dynasty, circa 2,000 years ago. Standing four square with head up & ears pricked the horse is painted in the original black pigment with a decorated saddle blanket adorning its back in much of the original red & white pigments. The rider has pink pigment applied to his face, with eyes & eyebrows in black & lips red. He wears a long sleeved tunic with circular skirt, in the original bright red, black & white colors, over red & white colored trousers, see photos. A black strap helmet is on his head with a bright red band around the forehead. His hands are molded as though holding reins. A lot of original pigment remains on this rare ancient Chinese artifact, and it has been modeled with clefts to its chest and under its legs. This artifact is from a large group of horse & riders that was recovered from one tomb of which I had one TL (thermoluminescence) tested at Oxford Authentication Ltd, and confirms the date of last firing at 1500 to 2400 years ago, consistent with the Han Dynasty. Please note that this horse & rider is not the one which was T.L. tested, but is from the same group. One of our recent auctions (ebay # 330118825694) saw a similar horse & rider sell for US$1913.00. SIZE: 315mm High (12.6 inches) high x 315mm (12.6 inches) Long CONDITION: Some expected degradation, wear & pigment losses, abrasions, and restoration, as a consequence of extended burial and subsequent cleaning. Restoration is difficult to see with out x-ray, but we would assume it has sustained some repair/restoration. Please view images carefully. DATING: Han Dynasty (206 B.C. to 220 A.D.) COMMENT: Compare this Han Horse & Rider with a pair of Han Dynasty Horse & Riders, illustrated in "Millers 1999 Chinese & Japanese Antique Buyers Guide", with an estimate of £5,000.00 to £6,000.00 (Pounds Sterling), or approximately $US4,000 to $US4,750 each. Another similar example in Christies Amsterdam auction of 4 November 2003 had an estimate of $US5,700 to $US9,000. See last photo.
