Mahogany 2 Glass Doors & 2 Drawers Corner Cupboard 1780 Our latest container recently arrived from the UK, and this item is from it. This is another fabulous piece, and an unbelievably rare one, An Original and Genuine Antique English George III Colonial Period Corner Cupboard, in Mahogany, w/ Twin Glass Doors, 3 Serpentine Shelves & 2 Fitted Drawers, Dating to c.1780..! It is a truly magnificent cupboard, see 6 pics above and 15 below. It features a molded overhanging cornice over the twin hinged doors, complete with what appears to be the original, wonderfully-wavy glass! The left-hand door has a brass faux escutheon, whilst the right-hand door has a genuine escutcheon and the original lock, though we have no key. Inside, the cupboard sports three serpentine-edged shelves over two side-by-side fitted drawers at the bottom, those drawers with hand-cut dovetails and original brass pull-knobs. It can be used floorstanding or wall-hanging. It measures fully 44 3/4" high by 35" wide across the widest point, 24" from the front of each side to the back corner, and it weighs in the region of 60lbs..! Imagine this filled with your special china, Dresden, Meissen or Staffordshires..! Given that it is c.200+ years old, one should accept that it bears the marks, imperfections and minor repairs that old age brings with it - a 2" piece of bead securing the glass in the left-hand door has been poorly reglued at some time, and a similar piece of beading is absent from the right-hand door. The right-hand door surface has a small area of cracking, the bottom of the right-hand doorstile has a sliver of wood absent, the top right-hand hinge has had a longer screw fitted at some time that has penetrated the surface, and t are some minor age-related shrinkage cracks to the front of the cornice. The glass is rather rattly, given the age-related shrinkage which has obviously affected the doors too. The white interior is not original, but the duck-egg blue visible beneath it appears to be. Given that the white has flaked off in places, it may well be removable, and that would reveal the duck-egg blue interior again. It is a large and very heavy piece, and the glass doors make it too fragile for us to ship.
