SKETCHES OF 3 MEN by MAHONRI M. YOUNG from the HERMAN PALMER ESTATE COLLECTION. In pencil. Signed "To Herman Palmer, M. M. Y." Done on a piece of brown paper. 8.25" x 7.25". Taped at corners to a piece of drawing paper. This is very typical of Mahonri...grab whatever is available and capture a gesture or image with a few quick lines for future reference. I worked with the Mahonri Young Estate at Brigham Young University and saw thousands of similar sketches on scrapes of paper, envelopes, letters, etc., but they seldom show up in public. Here is a rare opportunity to own an original Mahonri! As was typical, Palmer collected artwork from several of his contemporaries including Mahonri Young, Harry Herman Wickey, Jerome Myers, Will Low Bacher, Ellsworth Biles Jr., Irving Levow, B. L. Roys and others. Several of these will be listed in the near future. These were acquired as a lot at a New Hampshire auction in 2009. The source of the following information is Prof. Emeritus Stuart Palmer (Univ. of New Hampshire), who was the son and only child of Herman Palmer.Herman Palmer was born in Utah in 1894, and died in New York City in 1946. He was originally George Herman Palmer, but dropped the George in adult life.
