His bio is below.Indonesia, 1300âs to 1400âs. Majapahit 14-15th Century Earthenware Pottery Kendi Kundika Ewer Spouted Jug. Majapahit, Central to eastern Java. The body of ovoid form with hidden footring, wide nipple spout, the neck waisted and rising to an everted flange below a stepped rim ending in a rounded mouth. Base flat and unmarked. The earthenware unglazed, but finely burnished after firing leaving a reddish spotted patina. Areas of encrustation on the body, calcification and mineral deposits. End of spout rough and possibly chipped, but otherwise the body and spout appear to be sound and no breaks to the neck. A particularly good example of an elaborate stepped neck, and overall good condition. It measures approx. 6 1/8" x 6 1/8" x 7". Kendi developed from the Indian kundika vessel, and for Buddhist and hindu imported into Asia (including Indonesia, Cambodia, Tibet, China,...keep scrolling there are 14 pictures and more description beneath the photos below!Japan, Korea) the kendi form of pouring messes was associated with religious practice - as seen in the ritual and ablutions of Agama Hindu (water hinduism) still practiced in Bali to the east of Java where much of Majapahit cultural practice eventually moved. The finish and the quality of potting in the neck area of this example are particularly fine and possibly influenced by both architectural forms and metal wares.For those not familiar with Anthony Lee here is his bio: Anthony M.
