The New York Yankees are the most successful and celebrated franchise in the history of professional sports. They have reached baseball's pinnacle-- the World Series--on 35 different occasions, and won 24 World Series. Although they started out as the New York Highlanders, a name given to them because Hilltop Park was at the highest elevation in Manhattan, the team moved to the Polo Grounds in 1913 and began to be known officially as the Yankees. Sharing the Polo Grounds with the New York Giants became a problem when the Yankees started to outdraw the stadium's principle tenants. Within a few years, the "House that Ruth Built" was constructed and Yankees Stadium was born. Yesterday's stars used the stadium as a stage for setting records that would last for generations, including the record for the longest consecutive game hitting streak, a mark that still stands today. In 1996 and 1998 the franchise captured the World Series. Today, the Yankees carry on its winning tradition.
