The game began as a tropical pastime using bottle caps from a popular juice made of Passion fruit, Orange and Guava juices, hence the word "POG." In 1995, Merlin released a football series covering all the Premier League teams of the year and as expected, Pogs quickly became the currency of the playground and beyond. Players would take turns to throw a heavy plastic disc at a stack of cardboard Pogs and would then keep the Pogs that flipped upside down.
