That's why there's a real chance you could pick up something valuable for very little! I put them up on eBay at a low price and 'let the market decide'. Sometimes I win, sometimes I definitely lose. But I avoid paying the extortionate valuation costs and the ridiculous commissions and fee to auctioneers and agents. Stick in a bid…You could be lucky! Stunning 1800s Georgian Antique Tapestry Pole Face Screen Stand Picture on Carved Tripod Stand Quite simple, this is the most impressive Pole Screen I've ever seen. The screen itself is twice the size of other pole screens, the carvings are intricate and the condition is stunning. Please note, this lovely thing was listed previously but the buyer didn't complete. The glass-encased tapestry is of woven and finely painted silk. Bonhams suggested it would fetch at least £600 at auction (less all their fees and costs!) and I'll happily share the details of the Bonhams representative with the winner. The painting is extremely fine on the silk, in the faces of the featured characters. Pole screens served an important function in the 18th century: The tall thin screens shielded people’s faces from the direct heat of the fire. In the 17th and 18th centuries both men and women wore makeup to hide blemishes. (It was said that before he turned fifty the Prince Regent’s face had turned waxen and copper colored from make up.) The cosmetic preparation worn to hide small pox was thick, and made up of wax and white lead. The lead was toxic, especially when warmed, and the heat from a fire could be life threatening. A pole screen protected the face from intense heat and prevented the wax from melting and the cosmetics from interacting with the skin! Pole screens were fitted with sliding panels that could be raised or lowered as needed (this one has a lovely mechanism for this). The earliest panels were made of wicker, but these were replaced with beautiful needlework or embroidered panels that came in many shapes and sizes. By the late 18th century, skin disfiguration caused by plagues was no longer as prevalent as before, and smaller polescreens became more fashionable. This is a particularly large pole screen, with a beautiful tapestry/needlework scene and intricate carvings of extremely high quality. I don't believe you'll find a better one. On the back, the pole screen is covered with a very old patterned cloth, pictured. There are two beautifully made brass mechanisms to allow the pole to slide up and down. It's really too beautiful and delicate to risk being posted in the UK. However, if you live abroad, I'm sure it could be packaged up and shipped.
