Even with inspiration and talent removed from the equation, t are simple facts about the materials and methods I use that add up cost-wise and add up to a piece of true beauty and lasting value. are a few "glass factoids" about my work: Producing just one, 3-inch paperweight or marble consumes 16 gallons of propane. [] It takes 48 hours to cook a 100-pound batch of clear glass before I can make anything -- even a clear, glass "blob." [] My glass furnace has run day and night for over a year and a half, and it consumes more than 1,000 gallons of propane a month. [] The colored glass I use costs as much as $35 a pound, and glass is heavy so the money doesn't buy that much raw material! [] I burn myself almost every day at least once, but I don't charge for the Band-Aids. [] A 3-inch paperweight or marble takes two and a half days to cool down to room temperature, sitting in a computer-controlled, step-down annealing furnace. [] With a full day's work, I can make 10 or 12 colors of "stringer", which I then use to make "latticino" cane the next day. [] It takes 1.5 hours to make a 3-foot piece of latticino or filigrana cane, and then I use more than 2 feet of cane to make a 3-inch filigrana marble or paperweight. [] From conception to a finished paperweight or marble, takes me about two weeks. Some of my pieces feature "dichroic" glass. What is that ? Basically, it's a sheet of glass that has been put in a high-tech vacuum kiln w a thin film of vaporized metal oxide is applied to one side of the base glass. This microscopically thin (three to five millionths of an inch) coating reflects and refracts light in brilliant colors and can withstand the high temperatures of glassworking. Most of the dichroic glass that I use costs $150/square foot which works out to about $25 to $30 of dichro in a 3-inch marble or paperweight. Dichroic glass is expensive compared to plain colored glass, but I think it's worth it. I mention this because people often ask why my dichro pieces cost what they do. I wish that still pictures could capture how the dichroic glass sparkles and dances with color; it almost looks alive. I can only rely on you to trust my artistic judgment when I say that my glass pieces look much better in person than pictures can convey No Sales Tax!!!!
