This letter written less than one month before the start of the Civil War reads at the top - Auburn? N.C., March 14, 1861 and is to Chas. H. Rexsath? Phila. Penn. The letter has interesting content with talk of the coming war, President Lincoln and the concerns of the writer. The most interesting section reads: "...his hoard of Black Republican backers and if necessary to give them battle, or war to the knife - if nothing short of that war will gratify him. I have been reorganizing my old company and in assisting in forming new ones, and do all that is in my power to fit them for the field - I presumed I shall be obliged to enter the service of the state before many days, as it is the intention of our Governor, to place on a war footing , all available forces of the state. It is out intention and determination that in the event that Lincoln should attempt the coerscion of the states that have succeeded to oppose him with our utmost efforts...." The letter is four sides and appears to be signed J.L. Jordan.
