This auction is for a Mark Antony and Cleopatra silver denarius struck in 32 B.C., and featuring actual lifetime portraits of two of the most famous and ill-fated lovers in history. The obverse features the bare head of Mark Antony. The reverse has a bust of Cleopatra. The portrait of Cleopatra is somewhat worn, but it is still apparent that she was not a perfect 10, at least according to our modern concept of beauty. Perhaps it was the fact that she was queen of Egypt, one of the richest countries in the world at that time, which made her so attractive to Julius Caesar and later to Mark Antony. Or perhaps it was her intellect, which was said to be on a comparable level to that of Julius Caesar himself, and far above that of Mark Antony. In any case, when Cleopatra fled the battle of Actium to escape capture by Octavian's victorious fleet of warships, Antony followed her to Egypt where they both committed suicide in 30 B.C., just two years after this coin was struck. This coin is guaranteed genuine, with an approximate diameter of 16mm and a weight of 3.3 grams. I would personally grade this Rare piece as being in About Fine condition, with a banker's mark below Cleopatra's chin that doesn't affect her portrait and a few scattered surface scratches.
