MarkHewitt (b. 1955) is one of America's premier potters. The son and grandson of directors of Spode China in England, Mark apprenticed in England and America and studied traditional pottery of West Africa, East Asia, Europe and America. Mark's work is represented in numerous museum permanent collections, including the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution; the Philadelphia Museum of Art ; the Wiseman Art Museum in Minneapolis; the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia ; the High Museum in Atlanta; the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., and the Mint Museums of Charlotte, North Carolina. He has exhibited in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Australia, London, and Japan. Mark has been the subject of many articles, including in Clay Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Japan Times, and Smithsonian Magazine. Mark has become a potter of national reputation and influence. He curated, with Nancy Sweezy, a major exhibit of contemporary North Carolina pottery at the North Carolina Museum of Art. Out of that exhibit was born a book placing contemporary pottery within the context of the great 19th century North Carolina potters. The book, "A Potters Eye" by Mark Hewitt and Nancy Sweezy, has become a resource for understanding contemporary North Carolina pottery. Mark throws pots in a beautiful setting in rural Pittsboro, North Carolina. He has a large following of collectors of his work with long lines at his kiln openings. His early, first stamp (WMH) pieces are especially collectible. Up for your consideration is a rare Mark Hewitt wood-fired, salt-glazed, swirl-ware jug . The jug stands 7 1/4 inches tall and 5 inches wide. The jug has a nice orange-peel salt glaze with fly-ash spotting. The jug is excellently potted with thin walls, elegant handle, and a nicely turned lip. Of note is the nicely done multicolor swirl glaze. I am happy to report that the jug is in pristine out-of-the-kiln condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. The bottom of the jug has a clear example of Mark Hewitt's first stamp, which indicates that this piece was thrown between 1984 and 1995 by Mark Hewitt and not by an apprentice (/stamps). Swirl ware by Mark Hewitt is uncommon (I have not seen swirl ware at a Mark Hewitt kiln opening in many years and never in the form of a jug). Jugs by Mark Hewitt are uncommon. Thus, a swirl-ware jug combined with the first stamp makes this a very collectible example of Mark Hewitt pottery. The rare swirl-ware jug would make a great Christmas gift for a Hewitt pottery collector and for a North Carolina pottery collector seeking an early example of Mark Hewitt's work.
