Up for auction a William Marples & Sons Best Beach 'BB' 17" Jack Plane with 2 1/8" cutter in original box together with a 10 oz Whitehouse warrington style joiners hammer (unused). Marples stopped making wooden planes around 1960 and I believe this one is from around 1950's and used. Back in their 1959 catalog William Marples boasted that they were the only company in the UK still making Beach-wood planes. It comes complete with the original box which is in poor condition (see pictures). Also included is a 10 oz Whitehouse warrington type English hammer in new condition. Just the job for adjusting the plane iron. Altlas Forge who made the Whitehouse hammers no longer exist.I recently sold the both an unused Marples smoothing plane and a Jack plane. This is the last of the wooden Marples planes I have and while showing signs of wear to the sole (See last picture) and top of the plane (refer to first picture) it still makes a great user and these planes are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Anyone who has used a wooden plane will attest to the pleasure in using one over the Bailey type planes. A great plane with an iron of best Sheffield crucible cast steel back when Sheffield steel was actually made in Sheffield England and best quality English Beach block. The plane will be well packed to avoid potential damage in shipping. read more
