This is a first edition, first printing hardcover. This is the second year that Marvel published their Marvel Masterworks, establishing a pattern of producing only four Masterworks a year. What is very cool about these first editions are the‘galleries’ they printed on the inside covers. They used the covers of the books and set them like they were paintings on a wall. It is fun because they would also include the cover of the next book to be printed. If you look at the photo you will see the cover of X-Men, The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, and a sneak peek at the next book, The Fantastic Four . They continued this tradition all the way through the first 27 Marvel Masterworks. The reason they stopped may or may not have had something to do with the fact Marvel was heading towards Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection by 1996. So the 27 th book ( Avengers ), when printed, had an empty space instead of the cover of the next volume. It’s actually quite poignant to see. (By the way, if you happened to have collected the Akira hard covers from Graphitti Designs, that is the reason why they never produced the sixth and final book. Graphitti was dependent upon Marvel to create the original plates for their paperback reprints, which was cut short.) The other cool thing about these first 27 first editions is the actual hard cover book itself. read more
