Horatio at the Bridge, in an Italianate Landscape, Beautiful Old Master Print 1776 after Claude Lorrain This wonderful sepia-inked mezzotint print, dated January 1, 1776, shows, in the foreground, a herdsman and his wife moving their animals along: cows, sheep, and a goat. But it's not an image of pastoral tranquility: in the middle distance, a violent and bloody battle is being fought on a bridge, perhaps an evocation of the Roman general Horatio's famous battle of the 6th century B.C. Boydell and Earlom were noted for their versions of paintings by Claude, who was very much loved and appreciated in England. Original prints by Earlom and Boydell in this style are very much in demand, and I think you can see why. An acquatint of Boydell's after Claude Lorrain, of similar dimensions, read more
