This Cartes de Visite portrait features a young girl wearing a long dress. She has her hat on the table beside her. This photograph is a terrific display of fashion in the cdv era. Making this cdv even more special is the fact that the young girl is identified on the reverse of the photo (Mary Wilkes). The photographer is also identified. Research reveals that John P. Doremus (1827-1890) was a real pioneer in early photography. During his career he decided to go for a photographic adventure leaving his two New Jersey studios in the hands of his sons. He arranged for the construction of a barge to be used as a photographic studio and spent four years traversing the Mississippi River documenting the people, towns and scenery along the river. This is a nice sample of the work of an important photographer. The web site of the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium includes a biography of John Doremus. This cartes de visite is in very good condition.
