Common mineral that it is, fluorite is very rare in Maryland, reported from but a couple of sites and in minor quantities. What little is known to exist is highly unlikely to be anywhere near as aesthetically appealing as this 6.6 cm. x 5.2 cm. x 3.2 specimen from the Alleghany Aggregates Bedrock Quarry near Flinstone in Washington County. In addition to being rare, this particular piece boasts as deep, dark and beautiful a purple colour as any Maryland fluorite has been known to boast.
