This is a custom MAS L6 Banite Katana with a custom mount. The blade has been professionally mounted and is full of custom touches. MAS is relatively well known for making high quality swords. L6 steel is some tough stuff and this is a great chance to own a durable blade with a spectacular custom mount. This sword would retail new for over $3000. The blade alone would have retailed for $1100 if it were new. The koshirae make up the rest of the cost and they are in almost new condition. You will not likely find another sword like this. The mount is very unique in appearance and it would be difficult to find a better user blade. I think the swords versatility is what makes it really special. The blade is thick enough to do heavy cutting. (tatami mats with bamboo cores), yet light enough to be used for iai or kata. Most martial artists lust after a custom blade but can’t afford to have a special piece to use for iai and another for cutting. The fact that this one could fit both purposes reasonably well makes it very versatile. It is like a finely tuned instrument. I am sure it will find a good home with a practitioner, collector, or enthusiast. Details : The Tsuka/Handle: The tsuka feels great in the hands, very comfortable to hold. The fuchi/kashira are made by Patrick Hastings. (photo of the signature on the fuchi is available upon request) . The sameaga is aged and has sizable nodules. The tsuka is rewrapped with brown silk ito. The blade is mounted with one mekugi (peg). The tsuka does not rattle or wiggle when moving the blade at speed. The ito is tight and does not have much sign of handling. After the new ito was put on the tsuka the blade was not used much. The Tsuba/Guard: The tsuba is a custom made by Randy Black. It does not have a signature but is of a unique design and you will not find another one quite like it. The tsuba has some mild horizontal movement under pressure. The Saya/Scabbard: The saya has a dark brown to orange red dye faded dye. You can make out the wood grain in the saya. There are also golden falling pine needles under the lacquer and horn Koiguchi, Kojiri , and Kurigata. The look is very unique and classy. I have never seen a saya quite like it before and yet it does not feel out of place on a Japanese sword. The saya is in great shape, It has a few small scuffs but nothing significant. The Nagasa/Blade: The Blade is a MAS L6 blade. I believe it is one of the competition series blades but I am not 100% positive what model blade it is from MAS. This blade was made some time ago when their lead smith was doing the work. The blade was used for cutting and has some condition issues. There are cutting scratches that are visible in the right light. The blade also has two minor spots of edge roll/nicking. The nicks are about .3mm-.5mm in size and there are four of them. They are very small and shown in the photos. It is an important note that this blade was used by an experienced swordsman for test cutting. The blade performed well against hard targets. The cosmetic issues with the blade are the only real issue with the sword. If they bother you, there are a few polishing options that could help you with. A fresh polish would have the blade looking better than new. I have not perused this option myself because polishing is expensive and if the new owner wants to cut with the blade, than it they would likely prefer a cheaper blade with a few minor cosmetic issues.
