This enormouslyheavy, but compact, bronze sculpture has a luscious old patina emphasizing the artistry of its creation. It stands on a bronze pedestal from which it seizes the imagination with its enormous flanged ears fully open to hear and its long trunk wound down and then curling upwards as it must for the promise of “good fortune” required by Chinese myth. Its tusks point outward in perfect defense posture but its eyes show the soul of a gentle beast. It is outfitted with a complete ceremonial body wrap extending across his chest that is most luxurious. The design and embellishments on the body blanket display what would be worn in a regal celebration. Bronze tassels hang from the bottom on each side. But the piece-d-resistance is the riding platform at the elephant’s top which shows elaborately designed hand grips at each corner on which four dignitaries being presented would sit –- one at each corner holding a pair of handles for balance astride this magnificent animal. A most awesome piece of Chinese art representing grandly the Orient. Size is 16” tall, 22-1/2” long, and 14-1/4” wide (at ears). Base at bottom is 16-1/2” long by 12” wide. Weight is 62 lbs.
