Offered for auctiontoday, with no reserve , is a pair of solid sterling silver jam spoons made by John Round & Son Ltd.They are well balanced and identical in all respects, with straight (despite photo!), crisp, fluted handles, and have delicately patterned engraved bowls.Each spoon carries a set of clear hallmarks – the lion passant denoting 92.5% (sterling) silver, a crown (showing them to have been assayed at Sheffield), and the letter ‘M’ indicating they were assayed in 1904They measure 144 mm (5 5/ 8’’) overall, with a bowl width of 34 mm (1 3/ 8’’), and their combined weight is 54 g. (1.74 troy oz.) They are free from cracks, dints, repairs or any other blemishes – save for the minor signs of wear associated with their 108 years. The company, established by John Round in 1847 and based on Tudor Street in Sheffield (the world capital of cutlery manufacture), was a pre-eminent producer of high quality silver cutlery.
