Up for auction is this very fine specimen of Quartz (variety: Herkimer Diamond) from Herkimer, Herkimer County, New York. The specimen measures 2-3/4 x 2-1/2 x 1-1/2 inches and features several lustrous "Herkimer Diamonds" on a carpet of smaller quartz crystals on dolostone. The specimen is in excellent condition with the main crystal having a very shallow and very small chip near the termination. This is a piece from the Ray Ryder collection of Royal Oak, Michigan. A friend of mine brought much of the Ryder collection to the Tucson Show and I was able to select many fine pieces. The specimen comes with my friend's label that indicates the Ray Ryder specimen number (RR549). The quartz crystals from this area of New York are famous for their exceptional brilliance, clarity and sharpness. Loose crystals are far more common than matrix pieces and good matrix pieces are always in demand. This specimen features over a half dozen main crystals that rise vertically off the matrix. The largest crystal is about 3/4 inches across. The specimen sits perfectly for display on its own in two positions and the matrix has not been sawn. The dolostone is so hard that oftentimes collectors will saw specimens to trim them down to a more balanced or manageable size.
