This is an unusual Pilot Chart of the North Atlantic chart of the North Pacific, by Matthew Fontaine Maury, pioneer oceanographer and cartographer, commissioned by the U.S. government to produce detailed charts of Atlantic and Pacific Oceans (see Wikipedia for entry on Maury), dated 1853. It features a number of circular diagrams indicating average wind speeds and directions over different months of the year, in various parts of the North Atlantic. The Note on the chart starts, "The object of the Pilot Chart is to show how the winds blow in each month and in every 5 square of the Ocean. The information embodied here has been collected from the sea journals of American vessels, some of the journals going back as far as the year 1810." There's more in the detail photo of the Note. The chart measures 37 1/2" by 26 1/4" and is in very fine shape except for two tears, as noted, that have been carefully taped over - please see photos. It is a very handsome piece of mechanical drawing and engineering, and an important 19th century American marine artifact.Flat shipping/handling fee of $12 via USPS priority mail inside the US, $30 outside. Sorry, no returns on this piece because of the risk of mishandling. Thanks for looking!
