You are bidding on a gorgeous color etching and aquatint is by the well-known artist, Max Pollak (1886-1970).Etching was Pollak's favored medium; his technique included applying color directly to the plate 'a la poupee' before pressing results in unique impressions.Max Pollak was born and studied in Europe. Pollak spent three years in Paris before immigrating to the U.S. in 1927. He lived for a time on the East Coast where he traveled about and produced an amazing series of color aquatints of New York, Cincinnati, and Detroit. 1938, Pollak and his wife, Friedl, moved to San Francisco, California. Pollak was inspired by his new city and produced beautiful views of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Sausalito. Later travels were to Mexico and Guatemala, the likely inspiration for this piece. This etching is a great example of his work. The print itself is ~8.75" x 5". The frame is ~17" x 12". It is numbered 26/100 in the lower left corner of the print and signed "Max Pollak" in the lower right, all in pencil. At the bottom of the matte (lower left) in pencil is written "Mexico, Indian Fiscerboy".The print has some light foxing in at least two spots. See photos.
