Date of Publication Published Philadelphia by Daniel Rice And James G. Clark 1837-44. Type of Print Original hand colored lithograph. (with completely original coloring.). Gum arabic added to accentuate features. Size of Image Folio ( 19 3/4" X 14"). Condition In overall very good to excellent condition. Description Thomas McKenney, head of the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs for many years, was a champion of the Indian and fought throughout his tenure to preserve something of their quickly vanishing culture. His legacy was a gallery of portraits of the great chiefs by artists such as James Otto Lewis, Charles Bird King and George Cooke. After taking office in 1816, McKenney began to organize an archive to feature Indian artifacts. During the following years, a large delegation of Indians; Pawnee, Sauk, Fox, Menominee, Miami, Sioux and Chippewa visited President Monroe in Washington, McKenney took this opportunity to enlist artists Lewis, King and Cooke to paint portraits of the visitors.
