You are offered for bid: A Beautiful MDC Roundhouse CLIMAX Locomotive This is one from a fleet of fourteen Climax steam locomotives designed and constructed by a master modeler. This one has a real wood load in its fuel tender, stainless steel hand rails, green roof, balloon smoke stack, steel and brass colored accents, couplers front and rear, with its Engineer waving from the cab. I'll send the sitting Firemand holding a log shown in the photo. This is a good runner with a new body mounted on a Mehano chassis. It’s been given an expert paint job. It’s ready to be further decorated if the new owner desires. Just Google “climax” images to get some good ideas. PLEASE READ The original MDC Climax chassis leaves a lot to be desired, and usually requires a lot of work to get them to run well. The problem is with the gear train design with a large bull gear in the center of the chassis that results in severe “kinks” in the drive train to the trucks on any curve. Also, the trucks are mounted on sideways slider/flop guides and allowed to pivot around the U-joint to the bull gear. This has been described as, “wonderfully naïve engineering ”. Thus, having an original MDC Climax might be a pleasing idea but… it is seldom fun. That’s why modelers adapt other chassis to accept the Climax body. Model Railroading magazines have been publishing articles about the problems with the MDC chassis and how to “kitbash” a Climax for over 35 years. Some modelers will modify a typical GE 44-ton locomotive chassis but the fit is not exact and one must make extensive modifications to the body of the 44-ton so the Climax shell will fit over it. What results is an offensive representation of a Climax. On these Climax models the designer chose to use the Mehano chassis because it is an exact fit for the MDC body. About Mehano RSO - Mehanotehnika was a Slovenian toy company founded in 1952 . The company changed its name to Mehano in 1990 after Slovenia declared independence from the former Yugoslavia . RSO is a label used by Mehano on some its trains including small diesel switchers ( GE-35 and MDT models). Over the years RSO labeled locomotives have been imported to the U.S. and marketed by AHM, IHC, Lima and Model Power. When you see “RSO”, “Made in Yugoslavia” or “Made in Slovenia” on the chassis of a train, you can be sure it’s a Mehano. Mehano was purchased by the Belgium company LIVE in 2004 and its Slovenian manufacturing facility in Isola was closed in 2008 when LIVE moved manufacturing to China. Mehano trains have the reputation of being very good runners and highly reliable. They are collector items.
