This is a pair of 1927 awarded U.S. Army shooting prizes, a Gold Distinguished Marksman Badge - unhallmarked, but obviously "solid" gold and I am sure 14K or better - this is engraved to "Sam Frederick 1927." Also, an Army Area marksmanship "leg" medal with the blue infantry ring and officially engraved to "Staff Sgt. Samuel Frederick 112th Engs. Ohio N.G. 1927." The 112th Engineers were part of the 37th Division. This is an interesting piece with the infantry "leg" medal being named to an engineer. When these were first authorized in 1921, t were a number of different color enameled rings, including one in red and white for the Engineers, but by 1927, they only were awarded in blue, regardless of the winner's branch. They were called "leg" medals because three awards of the Army Area or an equivalent level shooting prize earned a Gold Distinguished Marksman Badge. That high award was seldom earned and when presented, it went to the best shots in the whole U.S. Army, usually the champion shots at their post or fort.
