METAL MODEL OF P&O LINE PASSENGER SHIP 'SS COMORIN' BUILT BY BARCLAY CURLE CO, GLASGOW 1925, 15 116 TON, 17 KNOTS, 166 METRES, 550 PASSENGERS. 31/10/1924: Launched by Mrs Alexander Shaw, wife of a P&O director. Second of three sisters to be built for the UK/Australia service, after CATHAY (launched on the same day but delivered a month earlier), and before CHITRAL. 11/04/1925: Ran trials and delivered. 12/03/1930: Caught fire while anchored in Colombo harbour and over 30,000 carcasses were destroyed. 1930: Low pressure Bauer~Wach exhaust turbines and Wyndham heaters fitted, increasing speed to 17 knots. Passenger accommodation was also improved, and she was now frequently employed on the Bombay and Far East services. 10/1937: Union Jack painted on her hull in Singapore for extra identification during the Sino~Japanese War. 05/09/1939: Requisitioned by the Admiralty for service as an armed merchant cruiser. Her after funnel was removed and eight 6~inch and two 3~ inch guns were fitted. 06/04/1941: Caught fire in the North Atlantic in position 54.34N, 21.20W. All but 20 of the 470 on board were taken off by the motor vessel GLENARTNEY, the ex~US destroyer HMS LINCOLN and the destroyer HMS BROKE.
