See the scans. This is a fine, original issue U.S. Army Mexican Border Service Medal with the edge properly stamped "18331." That number traces to Colonel Frederick W. Baldwin of Brooklyn, New York, the commanding officer of the 14th New York Infantry. Colonel Baldwin was born 4 May 1867 in New York. He served as a Private in the 23rd New York Infantry from 1886 until 1892 and reenlisted as a 33 year old Private in the 14th New York in 1900, gaining a commission the following year and rising steadily through the officer ranks until he was named Colonel in 1917. His son, Frederick W. Baldwin, Jr., served as a Sergeant with the 308th Infantry, 77th Division during WWI and accepted a commission as a Second Lieutenant in his father's 14th New York upon returning from France in 1919.The 14th New York State Militia was known as the "Brooklyn Chasseurs" and served during the Civil War as the 84th NYSM. It was and is a popular Zouave regiment that saw lots of action during the Civil War, the men fighting in their red legged Zouave uniforms throughout their war service at First and Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania.
