This is an original 1830s to 1851 U.S Dragoon saber belt plate or buckle. It has the puppy paws attachements on the left side for the saber belt. The infantry plate had the two belt attachments on the right side. The paws are slightly off allighment as can be seen in the photos. This appears to have been done when the lead was cast, as t are no stress marks on the posts or lead. T are no manufacture markings on the back. T are some dings on the front and along the top of the buckle as if it was struck by something sharp. It doesn't detract from its appearance or use, as I used it for a short time until I could find a reproduction for my living history presentations. This type of buckle was used by the dragoons from the late 1830s up until its replacement by the M1851 eagle buckle. Also used by the Mounted Rifles when they were formed in 1846.
