MI Hummel Goebel Figurine "Mother's Darling" Hum 175 TMK 5 (1972-1979) In the heart of lower Bavaria, where the vibrant green rolling hills of the countryside meets the backdrop of the breathtaking Alps comes the legend of the Friday-born child. In contrast to other children, a Friday's child is said to be born with the gift of creativity and imagination; Berta Hummel was a Friday's child. From her early childhood days she was always buzzing from one activity to the next and that earned her the nickname "das hummele" or bumblebee. The bee would play a large part in the trade marks of the MI Hummel figurines she would create. Hummels, as they are affectionately known, are one of the most recognizable of all the world's collectibles. The innocence of childhood that each figurine exudes warms the heart as we reflect romantically on our own days of youth where we spent long days outside exploring and being lost in all glory the world had to offer. These idyllic creations were product of a wonderful partnership between Berta Hummel, Franz Goebel, and Berta's convent, the Siessen. But beyond reminding us of the magic of youthful exuberance and a place lost in time, each figurine pays testimony to Berta Hummel or as she came to be known, Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel, a truly magnificent soul who despite the difficulties and hardships she faced found a way to inject sunshine into a world dulled and damaged by sickness and war. This figurine is called "Mother's Darling ." This figurine was created by Arthur Moeller in 1945 though it was changed by different designers over the next several years. It was initially called "Happy Harriet" but the name was changed soon after to "Mother's Darling." The figurine features a lovely blonde Bavarian girl wearing a long black dress with a blue bodice and long pink sleeves. She has a greenish colored apron over the top with reddish polka dots. Her short blonde hair is swept forward and under her red bandanna with white polka dots. There is a matching red necktie around her neck . She is carrying two laundry sacks in her hands. This piece is in excellent condition without cracks, chips or repairs. There is some ever so slight crazing/a bit of bubbling at the very bottom of the laundry sack she is carrying in her left hand that is not visible unless flipped over, and a few tiny crazing lines where her shoes meet the base. The base has the number 175 incised. It bears the fifth trademark over the glaze which means it was produced between 1972-1979. The original paper label is on the base.
